Rain Parade followed up that debut with the Explosions in the Glass Palace EP in 1984 and a final, major-label full-length, Crashing Dream, in 1986, before disbanding for the first time.ĭavid Roback, who died in 2020 of cancer, left Rain Parade following the release of the band’s debut and later formed Opal with Kendra Smith of The Dream Syndicate and Mazzy Star with Hope Sandoval. Rain Parade’s 1983 debut, Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, remains a high-water mark for Los Angeles’ Paisley Underground scene, which also counted The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and The Three O’Clock as key members. Piucci and the late David Roback formed Rain Parade in 1981, with the two singer-guitarists drafting Roback’s brother, Steven Roback, and Will Glenn and Eddie Kalwa to fill out the band’s ranks. The album, featuring new songs written by original band members Matt Piucci and Steven Roback, will be released on digital, CD, LP and cassette in May, the first title from new Colorado-based label Flatiron Recordings, co-founded by Bill Hein, who co-founded and ran Enigma Records with his brother in the 1980s. ![]() ![]() The reunited Rain Parade, one of the leading lights of the Paisley Underground scene in early- and mid-’80s Los Angeles, this spring will release Last Rays of a Dying Sun, the band’s third studio album - and its first collection of new songs in nearly four decades. ![]()

8/3/2023 0 Comments Superhero mashup![]() ![]() In contemporary culture there are many examples of frightening, subversive, and transgressive monsters, but what of those monsters we have already confronted, and whose multiple meanings and categories of identification are not only accepted, but exploited? In the twenty-first century, the monster has lost some of its transgressive power and transpersonal significance. As Asa Simon Mittman asserts in his introduction to The Ashgate Research Companion to Monsters and the Monstrous (2012), ‘s we cannibalise the Others of others, as we tear them apart and stitch them back together, we continually redefine the parameters of the monstrous’ (p. Our mediascape is increasingly populated with monsters from other cultures, times, and parts of the world. It’s one big distinguishing factor may end up being what can only be described as the single most random soundtrack in recent memory.Using examples from contemporary mashup, this paper explores the way monsters in allegedly subversive and progressive popular narratives often succumb to the influences of populist privilege – particularly when these monsters come from the past. BlackBerry doesn’t add much to the discussion as to why such stories might be percolating into our collective consciousness, nor why such narratives might be taking on an extra layer of meaning right now it feels content to fashion this unlikely ascension of the Great Canadian Smart Phone That Could as a superhero origin story yet doesn’t know what, if anything, it wants to say about this phenomenon past that. Jay Baruchel (far left) and Matt Johnson (center) in ‘BlackBerry.’ĭrawing from Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff’s book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry, the movie covers the familiar ground of Big Tech’s late ‘90s/early ‘00s gold-rush mentality, as well as syncing up with a number of other recent films - notably Air and Tetris - that combine millennial nostalgia, niche markets that cause mainstream cultural upheavals, and revenge of the nerds. And once he’s fired from his day job, Balsillie talks his way into becoming R.I.M.’s co-CEO, invades the nerds’ safe space, and starts screaming at folks to Get. He can’t take these guys seriously, yet this corporate shark can still smell the faint whiff of blood in the water in terms of the concept. But Lazaridis has been developing this idea for a phone that allows you to send and receive email, which is how they end up in Balsillie’s office, pitching the idea for their game-changing “PocketLink” device. is deeply in debt, and the office is little more than a beta-male frat house. A cybersecurity software company based in Waterloo, Ontario - feel free to savor the city’s name, given how this story ends the film certainly does - R.I.M. It’s taking a film that’s all thumbs and providing a much-needed jolt via a well-placed middle finger.Ībout the less-than-dynamic duo that rounds out this unholy corporate trinity: They’re Mike Lazaridis ( Jay Baruchel) and Douglas Fregin (cowriter-director Matt Johnson), longtime friends and co-founders of Research in Motion. Yet the performance isn’t just propping everything up. That the actor is providing this tech-product biopic with a center of gravity is almost by default, given how the film is a lot like its other two main characters: jittery, thirsty, somehow both too unsure and too blustery in all the wrong places. The man is explosive even when he’s silently standing still. ego to get things done and burn things down. But the real difference between this gent and the other morally dodgy guys filling his IMDb page is how Howerton is tapping into a specific white-collar volatility - that kind that drives a specific type of M.B.A. Beautiful, sputtering, spittle-flying fury.ĭon’t let the bald-pated look distract you: Howerton may have shaved his head to look more like Jim Balsillie, the business executive who helped turn the idea for an all-in-one mobile device into a reality, and then the first shot fired in a revolution. Pure, 100-percent uncut short-fuse anger. But Howerton brings something to BlackBerry, the scrappy Canadian indie about a scrappy Canadian company that changed the world, that goes above and beyond his usual lovable sociopath act. (See: Every single episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Howerton is in.) Nor is it off-brand for the writer-actor-producer to take on a role in which he radiates that he’s better than the idiots and saps and suckers surrounding him, as fans of the late, great sitcom A.P. It’s not like the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator hasn’t previously played someone who acts horrifically yet still keeps you on his side. Never, ever underestimate the power of a glowering, growling Glenn Howerton. ![]() ![]() ![]() To put a spin on the ball, which will make it curve in one direction or the other as it rolls down the lane, you need to twist your wrist while performing the throw in the direction you want it to curve. The only controls you need to worry about when bowling is the throw, aiming, and whether you put any spin on the ball. The highest possible score, which you can only get by perfectly hitting all 12 possible strikes, is 300. If you get either a strike or spare on the final frame, you get either one or two more shots to gain even more points right at the end. You get two attempts per frame, with 10 frames in a standard game, with strikes, when you knock down all 10 pins on your first roll, and spares, knocking down all 10 by your second throw, giving you bonus points. The more pins you knock down, the more points you get. This game is as simple as rolling your ball down the lane and knocking down as many pins as possible. Bowling tips and tricksĪlmost everyone has gone bowling before, but if it does happen to be your first time, worry not. Smashing while you’re too close to the next can easily make your shot go out of bounds, thus losing you a point. But be careful where you try to do a smash shot from. Whenever you go for a smash, time your swing for when the shuttlecock is at the peak of its arc, which you can tell if you do it right since the trail it leaves will be orange. If you can force them to lob the shuttlecock back to you, that’s the time to do a super smash shot. ![]() If they swing too carelessly, they can trip, which essentially makes your next shot a free point. Smash shots and drop shots move at different paces, which can cause your opponent to panic. More than that, though, you want to mix up what types of shots you do. This will force them to need to reposition in order to hit the shuttlecock back. The first is to aim for the side of the court where your opponent isn’t. To do this, you will need to master a few things. If you can direct the flow of the game and force your opponent to scramble around the court just trying to return your shots, it will only be a matter of time before they slip up or can’t reach your next shot in time. The most important tip for badminton is to immediately take control of the pace of the match. Aside from your service, you can swing left or right, done simply by swinging the Joy-Con in that direction, do a smash shot by performing an overhead swing, or a drop shot by flicking the Joy-Con forward at head level while holding ZR or ZL. To do this, you have a few moves to vary how you hit and return the shuttlecock. Whoever earns five points first wins the round. Each time you manage to do this, you earn one point. The basics of the game are the same as tennis - to land the shuttlecock on the other side of the court without your opponent returning it. This may be a sport that fewer people are familiar with, though it shares many similarities to tennis and isn’t terribly hard to understand. He was aloof, humorless and self-absorbed, and so tamped down that he seems to have been incapable of strong feeling.Īnother figure who comes inevitably to mind is Samuel Johnson, also an obsessive-compulsive and a collector of words. He led an extremely interesting life without being very interesting himself. ![]() But this is an almost forgivable lapse, because Roget is a hard subject to warm to. If Kendall's writing has a fault, it's a tendency toward mind reading and novelization. Roget began it when he was 26, then put it aside until he had retired from science and was eager to get his name before the public again. The thesaurus - or to give it its full title, Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged So as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition - was almost an afterthought. He was also one of the first to observe that the retina sees a series of still images as a continuous picture - a discovery that led to the invention of the zoetrope, and eventually to motion pictures. He invented the log-log scale for the slide rule, wrote an influential book on natural history and contributed numerous articles to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He trained as a doctor, and though his poor social skills kept him from being much of a clinician, he was greatly in demand as a lecturer in anatomy and physiology. Whatever else he was, Roget was immensely accomplished, even for an age when polymaths were far more common than they are now. It seems likely, in other words, that his passion for lists - for order and for categories - was not so much a heroic defense mechanism, as Kendall argues, but simply an involuntary part of who he was. Peter Roget's sister and daughter also suffered from depression and breakdowns.Īt an early age, Roget began making lists - of deaths, of events, of interesting words - and as he grew older, he also classified his experience according to an odd binary scheme, so that people, for example, were either "ordinary" or "peculiar," and landscapes were "beautiful" or "not beautiful." He counted all the steps he took during the day, had a fetish about cleanliness and was socially inept, failing to pick up obvious emotional clues.Īt the very least, he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder, but some of his behavior also suggest that, were his condition diagnosed today, he might be classified as someone with high-functioning Asperger's syndrome. Her brother, Samuel Romilly, a famous legal reformer, slashed his own throat after his wife died and after the death of her husband (when Peter Roget was 4) Catherine became needy, neurotic and eventually psychotic. Catherine Roget was a Romilly, from a family of French Huguenots who had settled in London, and her mother was a lifelong depressive, possibly a schizophrenic. Madness ran in the family, at least on his mother's side. Roget (1779-1869) was an obsessive list maker and classifier, and in this new biography, The Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness and the Creation of 'Roget's Thesaurus,' Joshua Kendall suggests - with something like obsessive frequency - that the habit was a kind of bulwark shoring him up against depression and mental instability. ![]() There's little trace anymore of Peter Mark Roget's original classification scheme, which divided up all of language into categories and subcategories. But its oddest feature is mostly invisible now that synonym finders have become virtually embedded in our computers. Dylan Thomas was another thesaurus thumber, and in his work, too, the words it supplied were not always improvements.Īs reference books go, the thesaurus has had a somewhat checkered history, in fact, and has probably occasioned as much bad writing as good.
